History Intent, Implementation and Impact Statements

Intent

We believe that high-quality, interactive History lessons will inspire children to think innovatively and develop their natural curiosity. Our History curriculum encourages children to develop a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Each History topic is taught via an enquiry question that forms the basis of the historical investigations over the following lessons.

In History, children are encouraged to be mindful of different interpretations of the past, and look at alternative viewpoints of the same event, and be able to explain reasons for these differences. The pupils will gain knowledge of Britain’s past and be able to identify and describe some historically significant people and their impact upon society and the wider world.

Implemetation

History at HPA & HBA is mainly taught as a discreet subject alongside a half termly topic. This gives pupils a chance to explore a wide range of sources from which the past may come alive. This includes a variety of out of school visits, artefacts and secondary written sources. A two-year cycle is planned to ensure full coverage of the curriculum that includes chronology of British history, along with aspects of the ancient world. Teachers plan history carefully using a central enquiry question which then leads to a conclusion based on the interpretation of the evidence gathered in order to answer the initial question as fully as possible.

Impact

We believe our History curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are fully accessing the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through: a reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes; a celebration of learning for each term which demonstrates progression across the school; assessment of the skills and knowledge through the progression grids and pupil discussions about their learning.
