Reading at Holbeach Bank Academy

Reading is a core priority at Holbeach Bank Academy, where we nurture confident, fluent readers prepared for lifelong learning. We embed reading across our curriculum to support academic success and personal growth.

Our Approach

  • Early Years: We start with phonics using Read Write Inc programme.  Pupils are grouped by ability to ensure targeted support and rapid progress in early reading skills.
  • Key Stages 1 & 2: Pupils develop both decoding and comprehension skills through a combination of guided and whole-class reading, carefully aligned with writing instruction to reinforce connections between reading and writing. Our reading scheme is Read Write Inc.
  • Teaching is carefully sequenced to build fluency and understanding, with ongoing assessment to address gaps.

Reading for Pleasure

We encourage a love of reading through story times, book events, pupil recommendations, and adult role models, fostering curiosity and resilience. We have achieved the Lincolnshire Bronze Reading Pledge

Vision in Action

Our reading provision is underpinned by high expectations and a commitment to inclusivity. It demonstrates clear progression from early decoding to advanced comprehension, ensuring all pupils are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for future education and life beyond school.

Writing at Holbeach Bank Academy

Writing is a foundational skill at Holbeach Bank Academy, taught explicitly and systematically to develop pupils’ abilities in spelling, grammar, punctuation, handwriting, and composition. It is viewed as a vital means for pupils to express ideas clearly and confidently across a range of contexts and audiences.

Our Approach

  • We prioritise oral rehearsal to help pupils organise and clarify their ideas before writing.
  • Teachers explicitly model the writing process, using clear exemplars and structured steps to demonstrate composition, editing, and revision.
  • Pupils take part in purposeful writing tasks across a range of genres and audiences, developing confidence in drafting, self- and peer-assessment, and refining their work.
  • Handwriting fluency is systematically taught so that transcription skills support, rather than hinder, effective composition.

Vision in Action

At Holbeach Bank Academy, a good writer is one who demonstrates proficiency in both transcription and composition. Pupils write fluently with accurate spelling and legible handwriting, showing conscious control over grammar and sentence construction. They confidently articulate and structure their ideas across a variety of purposes—such as describing, narrating, explaining, instructing, and arguing—across different curriculum areas.
