Geography

Intent

We believe that high-quality, hands on Geography lessons will inspire children to think creatively and develop their natural curiosity about the world and its people. Our Geography curriculum encourages children to develop a coherent knowledge and understanding of their own locality, Britain and the wider world, including significant human and physical features. Children will also learn to understand reasons for similarities and differences when comparing places, people and environments.

Implementation

Geography at HPA and HBA is mainly taught as a discreet subject alongside a half termly topic. This gives pupils a chance to explore a wide range of sources from which we can understand Geography.  This includes a variety of sources and geographical information, including maps, diagrams and globes, aerial photos and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) such as Digimaps and Google Earth. A two-year cycle is planned to ensure full coverage of the curriculum. Teachers plan Geography carefully using a central enquiry question which then leads to a conclusion based on the interpretation of the evidence gathered in order to answer the initial question as fully as possible.

Impact

Our Geography curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are fully accessing the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through: a reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes; a celebration of learning for each term which demonstrates progression across the school; assessment of the skills and knowledge through the progression grids and pupil discussions about their learning.
