Statutory Assessments
Throughout primary education pupils are required to participate in a range of statutory assessments.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The curriculum within the EYFS is accessed by children through their individual stages of development across the Reception year. There are two statutory assessments completed during the Reception Year.
The Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). At the beginning of the year, a statutory Reception Baseline Assessment is carried out with all children, within the first six weeks of starting school. This assessment is short, interactive and practical and is completed by an adult familiar to the children. It assesses the children’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills. The assessment provides a starting point for the children to begin their educational journey. This leaflet provides further detail for parents & carers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP). At the end of the Reception Year, the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is completed for each child. This summarises a child’s attaiment at the end of the year against 17 Early Learning Goals (ELGs) across 7 areas of learning, and aids a smooth transition into Key Stage 1, accessing the National Curriculum. Children who achieve all Early Learning Goals across all of the Prime Areas of Learning and in Literacy and Mathematics, achieve a Good Level of Development (GLD) at the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage. This leaflet provides further details regarding the EYFSP.
Phonics Screening Check (PSC)
In Year 1 all children are required to complete the Phonics Screening Check. This check is designed to determine whether or not children are able to decode with confidence at an age-appropriate level for reading. the check is completed in the academy with a familiar adult. If children do not pass the check in Year 1, they will retake it in Year 2. More information for parents and carers can be found here.
Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
Children in Year 4 will complete the Multiplication Tables Check in the Summer Term. The purpose of the check is to determine whether your child can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help your child’s school to identify if your child may need additional support. Further information for Parents and Carers can be found in this leaflet.
End of Key Stage 2 Assessments
At the end of Primary education, children in Year 6 complete SATs assessments. These assessments typically take place in May and happen at the same time for all children across the country.
