Design and Technology

Design and Technology at Holbeach Bank Academy is integrated through our cross-curricular topic areas. Our pupils learn about the importance of current product research and the benefits of thorough evaluation. The design process is looked at one stage at a time and the children’s understanding of how one factor can affect manufacture or the success of a product is tested. They develop problem solving skills and make informed decisions based on their observations and discussions. When faced with a design brief, individuals and/ or groups consider the impact of their choices in materials, techniques, ingredients and designs. Therefore the pupils at HBA develop as not only designers but also builders, craftspeople and consumers.

This begins at an early age with investigation or objects and processes- exploring the properties of materials and the theory of cause and effect. As children grow their understanding of differences in choice, design, creation and evaluation develops, allowing them to think critically about products. They then have the tools to make their own choices and improve upon their errors.

Implementation

At key stages 1 and 2, teachers prioritise developing pupils’ ability to design by, first, providing them with knowledge of materials, equipment and tools to support their application of concepts such as ‘functionality’ and ‘aesthetics’. Activities to consolidate and embed this knowledge can be low cost, for example, asking pupils to evaluate a range of similar products (such as toothbrushes, toys, cutlery, t-shirts, or school bags). Pupils are encouraged to work with a range of simple materials, including textiles and ingredients, emphasising the design process rather than simply the end product. Where practicable, pupils should be introduced to simple tools and their safe use to meet an identified need.

Pupils are introduced to the plan, make, evaluate sequence and are taught to be reflective as part of all lessons.

Impact

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, we hope to see pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We would like them to acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they will develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

What is Food Technology?

Design and Technology is all about having ideas and developing them – designing useful things, creating them and then trying them out. There are lots of different ways of making things, from cooking to woodwork, building to sewing. So what is Food Technology?

Macmillan Coffee Afternoon

This year for Macmillan we will be hosting a cake sale after school on Friday 26th September 2025.

We have attached some ideas of how you can use fruits and vegetables in your bakes below.

There are also recipes linked to countries in Europe as we celebrate European Day of Languages on the same day!

We welcome any donations of cakes and biscuits for the bake sale and look forward to seeing you there!
