Phonics

Phonics at Holbeach Bank Academy

Phonics at Holbeach Bank Academy follows the Read Write Inc programme.  Read Write Inc. Phonics is a DfE-validated systematic synthetic phonics programme with a whole- school approach to teaching early reading and writing, designed to ensure progress for every child.

Our Approach

Phonics is taught daily and where required with additional sessions throughout the day, to ensure knowledge is embedded and can be applied effectively across the curriculum.

  • Early Years –Children learn to blend sounds orally; they learn to read set 1 – single letter sounds and blend them into words.  In the Summer Term children begin to learn  to read set 2  long vowel sounds. Alongside reading these sounds children learn to write the letters and begin to spell words  moving on to simple sentences.
  •  Key Stage 1- Children learn to read set 3 alternative vowel sounds as well as revising set 1 and 2, and blending them to read  and spell words. They apply this phonic knowledge to read and comprehend storybooks that are carefully matched to the sounds they know. Children learn to read these books with a storyteller’s voice. In Year 1 we prepare children for the national Phonics Screening Check which takes place in June.
  •  Key Stage 2 – Children that require further phonics learning will continue to do so when they are in key stage two again working in small groups

Our Vision in Action

The aim of Read Write Inc. Phonics at Holbeach Bank Academy is for children to learn to read early. The aim is by the end of Year 2 children are able to read stories at over 100 words per minute. We aim for children to be able to form their letters correctly, spell words and be able to compose their own writing.

We encourage and support parents/carers to help their child practice reading at home.

The academy has subscribed to the Oxford Owl RWI eBook library. This allows children to sign in from home and have access to the reading books they bring home from school but as an eBook.  The children will be given a reminder of their Oxford Owl log in details. Sometimes teachers will set specific books for your child to read but also your child can have a look through the wide collection and choose for themselves. There are quizzes that go with each book too.

Happy reading!
